Milton Lee Olive, III was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of America’s highest military decoration — the Medal of Honor & Purple Heart for his actions in the Vietnam War. He was Born on November 7th, 1946 in Chicago, IL – Died October 22, 1965
“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Pfc. Olive was a member of the 3d Platoon of Company B, as it moved through the jungle to find the Viet Cong operating in the area. Although the platoon was subjected to a heavy volume of enemy gunfire and pinned down temporarily, it retaliated by assaulting the Viet Cong positions, causing the enemy to flee. As the platoon pursued the insurgents, Pfc. Olive and 4 other soldiers were moving through the jungle together when a grenade was thrown into their midst. Pfc. Olive saw the grenade, and then saved the lives of his fellow soldiers at the sacrifice of his own by grabbing the grenade in his hand and falling on it to absorb the blast with his body. Through his bravery, unhesitating actions, and complete disregard for his safety, he prevented additional loss of life or injury to the members of his platoon. Pfc. Olive’s extraordinary heroism, at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, are in the highest traditions of the U.S. Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of his country.”

The Military Order of the Purple Heart State of IL had the distinct Honor of attending the Monday morning 8:00 am Memorial Service of MOH Recipient Milton Lee Olive at the Chicago Park named in Tribute to this Brave Soldier’s Gallantry. The fact that only one dozen Veterans and one citizen there walking her dog were there, broke my Heart. What is to become of the Memorial paying Homage to America’s most highly decorated warrior’s when their comrades have passed on to eternal life. Just as MOH recipient gave up his life for his Nation, this Nation must REMEMBER their Sacrifices! Next years Service WILL have more attendees…………We Must NEVER Forget! GOD Speed

Lake County veterans will have free access to the Internet to apply for and check on the status of benefit requests beginning March 19.

With the assistance of Comcast Cable Co., the Lake County Veterans Assistance Commission will open a Vet Center office adjacent to the commission’s Waukegan headquarters.

VAC Superintendent Mike Peck said Wednesday the center will feature computers and Internet access provided by Comcast for veterans.

Peck said approximately 12 percent of the 40,000 military veterans in Lake County receive some form of government benefit.

“And we want to see that number go up,” Peck said. “People will be able to come in here, work with counselors and the computers and make sure they are tied in to whatever programs they qualify for.”

Peck said the center will also feature a television lounge and peer-to-peer counseling for veterans. It will be open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Veterans also will be able to learn about other available services and assistance programs. Anyone seeking help in filing claims or looking for financial assistance will need to make an appointment by calling (847) 377-3344.

The VAC and the new Vet Center are at 20 S. Martin Luther King Ave. in downtown Waukegan.   The grand opening for the center was scheduled for Monday, March 19 at 1 p.m. and  featured a ceremony honoring a veteran of the Battle of Peliu in World War II.

For more information, call (847) 377-3344.
